Experiencing the nature in a special way

    Teufelstisch (Devil’s table)

The ‘Teufelstisch’ is a rock formation which is to be found near Bischofsmais.
Legend has it that devil piled up the rocks. Indeed you could think that the ‘Teufelstisch’ would topple down any moment, but it has been standing here from time immemorial.

    Großer Pfahl

The ‚Pfahl ‚ is a quartz stratum traversing the Bavarian Forest in a length of 150 km. It appears at the surface most strikingly near Regen and Viechtach (there is an information centre about the Pfahl) and near Cham. In former time this formation was called ‘Teufelsmauer’ (Devil’s wall). Indeed subterranean forces were involved, when the mountains were rising and swelling in the Palaeozoic they broke at a fissure where the today’s Pfahl-rock streamed out in liquid phase and solidified.

    Rauchröhren

The ‚Rauchröhren’ at the Kaitersberg 1044m above sea level can be characterized as a unique rock formation. The two vertical towers of the ‘Rauchröhren’ have a total height of more than 30 meters and look like a flash had stroke them. The name ‘Rauchröhe’ originates from the following phenomena: when fog or low clouds are floating uphill they soar up this cleft as if it’s a chimney

Großer Arber - Arbersee (Big Lake Arber)

The Lake Arber is an ice age lake, which had been brought into being by an enormous glacier.

Despite being developed for the leisure activities it is particularly protected in large parts and provides a habitat for rare plants. There is a splendid view to the ‘Großer Arbersee’ from the so-called Mittagsplatzl. You can get to this wonderful place if you start at the ‘Bretterschachten’ and then follow the ‘Auerhahnstraße’.

Similar to the Lakes Arber (Big Lake Arber and small Lake Arber) Lake Rachel is a quaint ice age lake. The Rachel chapel is probably the most well-known chapel in the Bavarian Forest. It is situated midway between Lake Rachel and the peak of the mountain. You’ll have a splendid view from this wooden chapel to the Lake Rachel. The mountain Rachel with its height of 1453 m is only a little less high than the mountain ‘Großer Arber’ (1457m)

The upland pastures (Schachten) – Lake Latschensee

Particulary in the border region, most part of which is situated in the national park Bavarian Forest, there are numerous upland pastures. Upland pastures are woodlands which were cleared in former times and used as grazing grounds of calves, bullocks and steers. In this area there are also numerous upland moors and quaint lakes called ‘Latschenseen’.

    Höllbachgspreng

When hiking to the mountain ‚Großer Falkenstein’ via the ‘Höllbachschwelle’ you will reach a highly wild and romantic world, the so-called ‘Höllbachgspreng’. Rock blocks hulking up, very old, cut trees rotting, water falling beside the arduous trail … – it’s the scenery of a primeval forest. Nevertheless this path is a nature trail. On the mountain peak of the ‘Falkenstein’ a view to the almost endless sea of wood will be the reward.

    Wackelstein (Rocking stone)

The Wackelstein (Rocking stone) can be found near Solla. This 50 tons heavy boulder got this name, as despite of its enormous weight a strong person or a family can move (rock) it at a particular point.
